Polylactic Acid (PLA) is the premier bio-based, biodegradable alternative to fossil-based polymers. However, extruding PLA presents unique thermodynamic and rheological challenges that require highly specialized equipment design to prevent degradation and guarantee dimensional stability.

Moisture Control & Crystallization

PLA is highly hygroscopic. Extruding undried PLA leads to rapid hydrolytic cleavage, which reduces molecular weight and ruins mechanical properties. Baodie systems utilize specialized desiccant-wheel dehumidifying dryers to achieve a moisture content of <250 ppm, preventing melt bubbling and degradation.

Optimized L/D Ratio & Screw Design

Standard PVC or PE screws cause high shear heat, degrading PLA’s delicate molecular chains. We design proprietary single-screw geometries with L/D ratios of 30:1 or 32:1. Gentle mixing zones distribute heat evenly, and low-shear profiles maintain melt strength for highly uniform tube and profile walls.

Closed-Loop Precision Calibration

PLA has a narrow processing window and low melt strength, making vacuum sizing delicate. Our Vacuum Calibration Spray Cooling Tanks use multi-axis micro-positioning and highly responsive pressure regulators to stabilize shapes instantly. This avoids deformation during high-speed production runs.
